WHAT-A-FIND
A few years ago, we got word about a ‘60 Cadillac 4 door hardtop available for $3,500. Grandpa willed the Caddy to his young grandson. Made a fast highway ride to check it out. Wanted the car, but it was overpriced. But hard to walk away, because the potential. Left a telephone number, followed by a slow ride home.
PURCHASE
A month later the kid called offering to renegotiate. Checked out the car again. Found it buried in a snow bank. Learned it had a busted transmission. Made an offer of $700, payable at $100 a month. Yes! Made the deal. Plunked down $200 to secure the car and made the first two payments. The following month we got an opportunity call. The kid said he needed $300 and would give me the Pink slip to get his stereo fixed in his rice burner. So we bought the Caddy for $500 total. It’s now worth $20,000 or more.
HISTORY
Grand-dadi-o was quite a sport and bought this Cadillac Sedan DeVille with a 390 V8 new in ‘60, with only 9,225 made that year. When proved too old to drive, he lovingly retired the Caddy to his barn for 18 years, faithfully cleaned and kept it running smooth.
RESTORATION
What you see before you was completely original. We brought it back by first adding new license plates, fuzzy dice, spoke wheels, paint job, new exhaust system, replaced all the rubber parts that were shot like all the hoses, belts including the weather checked tires and adding chrome spoke wheels and gangster whitewalls. Good luck: found a used transmission for parts for $50; and got it fixed at a local club members trany shop. He got it fixed for $300. What a deal! (It pays to have good car club buddies.)
JOLLY FOLLY
Some are MOPAR fans, other only exhibit Chevys and Fords. We’re Cadillac folks, enjoying our eye-candy from the happy shinny grill teeth to its outlandish pointed shark-like fins. We now call her (AURORABOREALIS), Aurora for short.
