Description
Following the runaway success of the Ford Mustang in 1965, FoMoCo executives gave the green light to Lincoln-Mercury to develop a new model, based on the upcoming revised Mustang platform, to slot between the Mustang and the Thunderbird. The Mercury Cougar, which debuted alongside the newly refreshed 1967 Mustang, was meant to combine 'Personal Luxury' attributes of the T-Bird in a more driver-focused platform. One of the key points of the Mustang's redesign was to allow for larger engines to .....
stay on par with Mopar and GM. This also allowed Mercury to give the Cougar some serious power, resulting in a surprisingly capable GT car aimed at the more mature muscle car buyer.

The restored 1970 Cougar Convertible offered here is a handsome example finished in Red, and was built October 31, 1969 and delivered new Herb Stevens Inc, in Phoenix, Arizona. According to the accompanying Marti Report, this car was very well appointed to include the, Corinthian white upholstery with black dash and carpets, power top with flexible plexiglass rear window, air conditioning, tinted glass, power front disc brakes, power steering, bucket seats and a center console. Other equipment added later includes power windows and a factory AM/FM stereo. A set of 15x7 factory-style mercury rally wheels wrapped with 235/60R15 Cooper Cobra Radial G/T add to this cat's handsome looks.
Power and performance are provided by a healthy 351 Windsor V8 engine equipped with Holley Sniper Electronic Fuel injection paired with a FMX Select-Shift transmission. The engine is detailed and is stock in appearance with attention paid to the correct paint colors, finishes and decals.
According to the Marti Report that accompanies the car, of the 2,322 standard Cougar Convertibles produced for the 1970 model year, only 119 were made with the Red paint and Corinthian White color scheme this car has. The Cougar sold in fractional numbers compared to the Mustang, making well optioned, beautifully presented examples like this 1970 Mercury Cougar a rare find.
