Picture this if you will.....The year is 1967. The Vietnam war is raging, an as yet unknown guitarist named Jimi Hendrix just released his debut album Are You Experienced, and Aretha Franklin is asking for just a little Respect. It's a hot, humid, July 25th in West Palm Beach, Florida, and a young Lyra Pittman walked into Stewart Pontiac Co. and fell in love with a brand new 1967 GTO. This beautiful burgundy beast, with a black vinyl roof and parchment interior had only rolled off the Pontiac, .....
Michigan assembly line a couple weeks before. But the specification and options were perfect for a south Florida muscle car. The parchment interior color meant that you wouldn't burn your legs climbing into a black vinyl seat on a scorching summer day. The factory air conditioning offered year-round comfort against the highest summer temps. The power steering and power brakes made it an easy driver. And the his and hers shifter(well, maybe hers and hers in this situation) was attached to a smooth shifting and heavy duty three speed automatic transmission. Ms. Pittman drove this well-equipped beauty off the lot and to her home four and a half miles north off of 51st St. You can still look at Google maps and see the original dealership that is now an abandoned building with its glass storefront, and the house where Ms. Pittman lived (maybe still?) and picture this beauty sitting in the driveway there. Where this GTO went from there is unknown, but there is a list on the cover of the maintenance folio with the names of the second owner, Eva Cruz, and the third owner, Bob Garner handwritten on the front. Inside a copy of a Florida title from 1993 shows the name of Janet Garner (maybe Bob's widow or daughter?) and the car now residing in Sanford, Florida. We received this car from what we presume to be the fifth owner in Winter Garden, Florida in the outstanding condition as you see it pictured here for sale. The vehicle shows 36,111 miles on the odometer, and while you may never know if it is 36,000 or 136,000, the overall feel and condition is that of a low mile original car that has survived major damage or modifications over almost 60 years of use. Under the hood is the original 400CI 335hp V-8, with the number 723884 YS on the block matching the numbers on the original 1967 New Vehicle Pre-Delivery Inspection sheet still with the other original documents included with the car. This burgundy beauty has received a repaint as some time in it's life, and the A/C system was just recently completely redone with new compressor, hoses, drier, condenser, and updated to R134a refrigerant. The underside shows what you would expect of a non-restored 1967 GTO, with only light surface rust and what appears to be original floor pans that have never seen northern snow and salt. The mufflers have been replaced at some point, and air shocks have been added out back for that period stance along with the oh so period Cragar S/S mags and white letter tires. This GTO runs excellent and was driven from Winter Garden to our showroom in Ocala, Florida, a distance of over 67 miles on the Florida Turnpike with nary a hiccup. How many other 60-year-old cars could do that? The paint shows very well, the vinyl roof is in excellent condition along with all the interior upholstery.
