Description
This 1965 Ford Mustang GT Convertible is a gorgeous factory triple black convertible that comes absolutely loaded with options! In the late 50s, American motorheads were beginning to display their desire for performance-oriented cars with big engines. The only problem was that in order to get those higher horsepower, bigger displacement engines you had to buy a big, full-size car. Then in the early 60s, rising fuel costs led manufacturers to begin producing smaller cars, with smaller engines .....
that were more fuel efficient but lacked the much desired performance. Additionally, all of these new fuel-efficient compact cars were not "cool" in the eyes of younger buyers. So, under the leadership of famed automotive executive Lee Iacocca, the Ford Motor Company sought to fill that gap and debuted the Mustang at the New York World's Fair on April 17, 1964. Iacocca's initial vision called for the youth-oriented Mustang to have a long hood and short deck, that looked and felt sporty, and that would come with modest price tag. Ultimately, the Mustang would become one of the most successful Ford cars of all time and it even launched an entire new genre of muscle cars known as "Pony Cars" all based on Iacocca's initial vision. After the successful mid-year launch of the 1964-1/2 Mustang, Ford would follow up the next year with its 1965 Mustang, that largely retained the same iconic look but would see several usability upgrades such as shifting away from an outdated generator system to a more robust alternator setup. Ford also upgraded the base 6 cylinder engine from 170 to 200 cubic inches. Perhaps the biggest upgrade to the 1965 Mustang was the debut of the GT Equipment Package, which has lived on in various forms throughout much of the Mustang's storied history and it's even seen on the newest Mustangs today. Standard GT package equipment included a 4-barrel fed 289 V8, a special exhaust exiting through the rear valence with flared chrome tips, special European racing-inspired GT rocker panel striping and other GT badging, disc brakes, fog lamps, and a number of other sporty options. On top of the standard GT equipment, you could also upgrade to even more options such as styled chrome steel wheels and the auxiliary "Rally Pac" gauge cluster. In total, it is believed that Ford produced approximately 15,000 GT Mustangs in 1965 with the convertible being the rarest body style, more rare that the Fastback or the coupe. This particular example comes to us from a Southern family who reportedly stewarded this gorgeous Mustang GT for over 30 years. Powering this A-Code '65 Mustang GT is a 289 cubic inch V8 fed by a single 4 barrel carburetor that together were said to have created 225 horsepower when new. The 289 V8 is backed by a 4 speed manual transmission that makes this Pony Car an absolutely awesome car to drive! Exhaust exits the A-Code power plant through the rear valence via a dual exhaust setup equipped with Flowmaster mufflers that give this Mustang a tremendous throaty sound. This '65 Mustang Convertible is absolutely loaded with options! Power steering is a fantastic addition to any classic car from the 1960s since it improves the overall driving experience and it makes squeezing into a tight parking space at the local car show or ice cream shop a total breeze. A driver's side remote adjustable chrome mirror is another great add-on to this car for better visibility while parking and while cruising. Front disc brakes are another wonderful option on this 1965 Ford Mustang GT because it supplies improved stopping power, and the entire system has been upgraded to a dual master cylinder setup for more reliable braking as well. The black vinyl convertible top is in great shape and it's easily raised and lowered manually by a single person. When the convertible top is in the down position, it also tucks neatly under the black vinyl boot that makes for a nice clean look on sunny summer day. This A-Code Mustang has been correctly refinished in Raven Black, just how it came when it rolled off the Dearborn, Michigan factory floor back in 1965. The interior on this 1965 Ford Mustang GT Convertible is absolutely gorgeous! The front bucket seats and rear bench seat complete the triple black look of this GT Mustang, re-done in the Deluxe Pony upholstery. The matching door panels, black carpeting, woodgrain trimmed center console, woodgrain steering wheel, and padded dash are all in fantastic condition as well, highlighting the overall deluxe look of this stock-looking interior. Instrumentation on this '65 Mustang GT Convertible also comes fully equipped with a 140 MPH speedometer, amp gauge, temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, and fuel gauge, along with a "Rally Pac" cluster equipped with a clock and a 6,000 RPM tachometer. You'll be able to stay cool even on the hottest summer days since this 1965 Mustang Convertible comes equipped with factory air conditioning. The dash is finished off with a woodgrain-trimmed glovebox and push-button AM radio. Whether you're buying your very first classic car or you're adding to your existing stable of Ponies, this 1965 Ford Mustang GT Convertible would make an excellent choice.
