Members of the Cushman family started the Cushman Scooter Company in 1903 in Lincoln, Nebraska and later incorporated it as Cushman Motor Works in 1913. The Cushman's started out producing engines for various farm equipment, pumps and even boats. In 1936 the Cushman Motor Works began making Auto-Glide scooters and became successful during the Great Depression as they were an easy and more affordable way of transportation and also offered a bit of fun to drive. During World War II Cushman .....
not only helped the war cause by manufacturing bomb cases, fuses and other needed equipment but produced specialty scooters for the Army that could be parachuted in to provide a quick means of transportation for personnel.
The Cushman Eagle was produced from 1950 to 1965 and was an instant success and has been called the pinnacle of scooter development with production that struggled to keep up with the demand. It had an iconic motorcycle look with an exposed engine and topside fuel tank. What really set these motor scooters apart was Cushman's famous single-cylinder 4-stroke carbureted Husky engine which originally came out in 1922. Production in 1950 was around 15,000 scooters including the various models during its annual run.
We are excited to offer this 1950 Cushman Eagle Scooter finished in Black exterior paint with a Black leatherette seat. Powering this Cushman Eagle is its Husky 4-stroke engine with a surprising 318cc rating that is quick to accelerate and is capable of around 50 MPH. This scooter is equipped with a 2-speed manual transmission and hand shifted lever clutch that is sometimes referred to as a “suicide shifter”. This Cushman Eagle features the dual exhaust set up that's seen only on newer models, drum brakes, dual front suspension springs, luggage rack, storage bag, left side mirror, dual seat springs, dual footrest pedals, single headlamp, single taillamp, rear license plate bracket, 9” wheels and Cushman Coker tube tires measuring 4.75-7.75.
This Cushman Eagle has been restored to a high standard by a collector who specialized in Cushman scooters, and this is 1 of 3 Cushman Eagles that we purchased from the collection at the time. Last showcased in a Texas collection, this scooter has been well cared for and ridden very sparingly. This scooter makes for a great get-a-round cruiser, especially for shows and local events.
