This 1934 Ford Model 40 5-Window Coupe is a beautifully restored pre-war Ford that maintains a gorgeous stock look and sports numerous driver-friendly upgrades! Despite massive sales successes in the Model T and later the Model A, by the early 1930s Ford sales had slowed and questions were abound whether good 'ole Henry Ford could work his magic a third time and revitalize sales at his namesake company. On March 31, 1932, the Ford Motor Company announced the debut of its brand new Ford V8 .....
engine to the world and the Flathead Ford V8 started taking the American automotive industry by storm. Touted for its innovative design paired with its modest cost, FoMoCo would continue to utilize the Flathead to help separate it from its competition. However, by the end of 1932, the tasteful (and now acclaimed) '32 Ford body design was somewhat obsolete so on February 9, 1933, Ford debuted the new-look Model 40 with Henry's 221 Flathead paired with Edsel Ford's sleek, modern exterior styling influence. While hopes were high for the 1933 Model 40, production issued hampered the production of the redesigned bodies which in turn led to fewer sales than hoped. Then, nearly a month before its competitors debuted their latest models, Ford held a major press event on December 6, 1933, introducing the 1934 Ford Model 40 to the public. Interestingly, this event was the first time in company history that Ford served alcohol at a press event. After the lubricated journalists enjoyed their booze and cigars, they wrote very flattering reviews of the latest Model 40 which was modestly updated from the previous year models. Up front, the chrome grille largely retained the same footprint of the previous year's model but was raked more vertically and sported fewer chrome vertical bars and a deeper surrounding frame. The front V8 emblem was also modernized with a surrounding triangle accent and vertical divider. Down the sides, the hood louvers were also raked in a more vertical fashion and a second handle was added to the side opening hoods as well. While customers still had the option of black painted fenders, it now became standard that the fenders in 1934 were painted to match the body color. Finally, in 1934 Ford production and sales seemed to be on the up and up with the 1934 models outselling the previous year's models by nearly a quarter million units. In total, Ford produced nearly 75,000 five window coupe models and their modest prices along with customizable V8 power plant made the 1934 Ford 5-Window Coupes a favorite among hot rodders in the decades that followed. Under the hood on this '34 Ford Coupe is a 221 cubic inch Flathead V8 engine fed by a single 2 barrel carburetor that together were said to have created 85 horsepower when new. The 221 Ford Flathead is backed by a 3 speed manual transmission that makes this classic Ford coupe a blast to drive using its floor-mounted shifter. Exhaust exits the 221 Flatty power plant via an upgraded dual exhaust setup that created a fantastic throaty sound out of the rear tailpipes. As mentioned above, not only does this 1934 Ford Five Window come outfitted with fantastic stock options, it has also been tastefully upgraded to turn this stock looking Ford into a serious summer cruiser! The braking system underwent some fantastic updates including upgrading the front drums to front disc brake and upgrading the mechanical braking system to a hydraulic system with a dual master cylinder providing better and more reliable stopping power to this V8 Ford. Up front, this Ford sports dual chrome bumper guards along with dual chrome-trimmed horns that give a more luxurious look and feel to this '34 5 Window Coupe. Dual chrome outside mirrors are another welcome addition to this classic Ford since it makes squeezing in and out of a tight parking space much easier and of course helps with lane changes on a Saturday summer cruise. In the rear, dual taillights are another welcome addition since it means that you have turn signals (a luxury for Pre-War cars) and drivers behind you can better see when you're braking. The rear end is capped off with a covered rear-mounted spare tire that gives this 1934 Ford Model 40 a more luxurious look along with providing a spare tire should you need it. The electrical system has also been updated to a 12 volt electrical system including an alternator from the antiquated 6 volt system, which provides for better overall electrical performance and improved startup capabilities. Riding on a set of wide whitewall tires mounted on Medium Cream painted wire wheels, and each accented with a chrome V8 Ford hubcap, this 1934 Ford Coupe has a fantastic look whether parked or cruising the open roads. The all steel body and fenders have been refinished in Black paint with Medium Cream pinstriping that completes the exterior appearance of this gorgeous Ford. The interior of this 1934 Ford Model 40 5 Window Coupe is absolutely stunning! The front seat and door panels have been reupholstered in period-correct Tan mohair fabric. The rumble seat sports great-looking Chocolate Brown upholstery as well making for a comfortable riding experience in the novel rear rumble seat. The black painted dash, tan carpeting, and black steering wheel all retain a wonderful stock look and all appear to be in fantastic shape as well. Front seat belts have also been tastefully added under previous ownership which make for a nice upgrade to any classic car of this era. While retaining a period-correct look, the instrumentation has also been upgraded to include a Stewart Warner 90 MPH speedometer, battery gauge, and lighted fuel gauge, along with a Stewart Warner oil pressure and temperature gauges mounted neatly under the dash as well. The dash is finished off with a glovebox, and various other controls, along with an under-dash cigarette lighter and heater. Whether you're buying your very first pre-war classic car or you're looking to add a fantastic driving coupe to your existing FoMoCo collection, this 1934 Ford Model 40 5-Window Coupe would make an excellent choice.
