Description
You don't get too many opportunities to own a factory-built hot rod but here is one from Chrysler's long-gone Plymouth division, the Prowler.

Chrysler's design and international director Thomas C. Gale said his ''love for 1930s-era hot rods inspired Chrysler's latest design triumph, the retro-styled Plymouth Prowler.'' Gale, who had a hotted up 1932 Ford in his garage, approved the hotrod-inspired Plymouth Prowler.

Part of a brigade of “neo-retro” vehicles rolling out during the .....
late 1990s and early 2000s, such as the new Volkswagen Beetle, Chevrolet's HHR, Chrysler's own PT Cruiser and the new Mini Cooper, the Prowler is probably the most exotic-looking example of the group.

The car's body was produced in Shadyside, Ohio while the remainder of the car was assembled by hand at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant (CAAP) in Detroit, Michigan. The car's Prowler Black paint (code PXT) and trim are in great shape, as is the black folding canvas top with minor blemishes.

One of the most striking design features of the Prowler was its open-style front wheels with double wishbone front suspension. This roadster rolls on Riken Raptor radials up front, size 225/45ZR17, and Toyo Proxes ST radials tires out back, size 295/40ZR20. Each one is mounted to a custom alloy wheel. The tires and wheels are all in very good order. The car has 11-inch vented discs in front and 13-inch vented discs in the back. The car rides on a 113-inch wheelbase and has a 12-gallon fuel tank.

Under the hood is a 3.5L, SOHC, 24-valve V-6 engine (code EGG) with an aluminum block. Backing this motor is a four-speed Autostick automatic transmission (code 42LE). Driver convenience features include air-conditioning, power rack-and-pinion steering, power four-wheel disc brakes, cruise control, power windows, power locks, keyless entry and power sideview mirrors. Safety equipment include dual front airbags and anti-lock brakes.

Inside is a cozy black leather interior. Five gauges are canted toward the driver, plus an AutoMeter tachometer perched atop the steering column. There is a leather-wrapped steering wheel with satellite audio control mounted on the dark side and cruise controls on the side facing the driver. The black bucket seats are in very good shape, with just some blemishes noted here and there on seating surfaces. The matching black carpet looks good, as do the matching inner door panels.

Ragtop competition to this Plymouth in 1999 included BMW's M3 Cabrio, Chevrolet's Camaro, Ford's Mustang and Pontiac's Firebird.

If you liked the standout looks of Plymouth's Prowler but marriage, kids and a mortgage prevented you from buying one then, isn't it time to reconsider owning a factory-built hot rod? Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to check out this survivor Prowler!
