Description
If you're 50 or older, you most likely remember NBC's Friday Night TV lineup in 1982. In the central time zone, the Proud as a Peacock network started with “The Powers of Matthew Star” at 7, followed by “Knight Rider” at 8 and finished with “Remington Steele” at 9.

Many up-and-coming car fans were enthralled at the exploits of one black third-generation Pontiac Firebird from the show at 8 p.m., the self-driving, talking, do-it-all Knight Industries Two Thousand model or K.I.T.T. for .....
easy reference.

Thanks to Bob's Prop Shop in Dallas, Texas, you can now have your own version of Michael Knight's trusty steed, more than 40 years after the show first aired.

The car's black exterior has held up well and is in overall very good order. NBC took full advantage of the third-generation F-body's styling, the power bulge hood, the steeply raked windshield, the aerodynamic sideview mirrors, the rear spoiler and even the flush-mounted full wheel covers. Using the built-in headlights next to the fog lights kept the pop-up headlights out of sight. The roof has glass T-top panels that are removable. The taillight panel is blacked out.

The bodywork is straight and solid with minor imperfections, the engine bay is tidy and the cargo area looks good. There's a second battery stored in the luggage well to run all of the KITT gizmos and gimmicks. The body-colored bumpers fit tightly to the body. Because of the modifications there is no working speedo/odo, fuel, oil or temp gauge in the car. The amp gauge and tach work.

This KITT rolls on Hankook Optimo H724 radials, size 205/75R14 at every corner. Each one is mounted to a flush, factory wheel cover. The tires and wheels are all in good order.

Under the counterbalanced hood is a 305 CID V-8 engine with a four-barrel carburetor. There's an Edelbrock air cleaner and valve covers. Backing the motor is rarely seen, a five-speed manual transmission. Driver convenience features include power rack-and-pinion steering and power four-wheel disc brakes.

Inside, the tan cloth interior is in fantastic overall shape. The front buckets and rear demi-buckets look good, as does the matching carpet. The inner door panels and headliner are in good shape. Most of the rest of the interior is no longer stock. The three-spoke steering wheel gave way to a yoke-type controller and the stock dash has been replaced by the Knight Industries electronic set-up, with digital displays, colorful codes and two television monitors.

If you've always wanted your own KITT copy, this is your chance. Visit MotoeXotica Classic Cars and check out this blast from the past. Note that the Wilson Knight diagnostic tractor-trailer and Dr. Bonnie Barstow are not included.
