The year was 1971, I was just 21 years old. I ventured out looking for a new car. The first car I looked at was a 1971 Hornet SST 360, 4spd. The second car I looked at was a 1971 Chevelle, “heavy Chevy” in burnt orange with wide stripes on the showroom floor. After talking to the salesman, which turned out to be the owner’s son, I got an “end of the year” discount price because it was August. I went to the bank to see if I could get a loan and I was able to purchase the car. I lost the car to the bank about a year or so later due to a divorce. About 4 or 5 years later while out with my current wife, we spotted a 1971 burnt orange Chevelle in a used car lot. It had new paint but no stripes on it. I knew it was my old car because it had the walnut steering wheel and speaker covers I had put on it. I purchased the car back and kept the car until I sold it to my wife’s cousin in 1977 or 1978. He blew the transmission and sold it to the transmission shop. I have been thinking about the car ever since, and begun to look for it or a close second. On 11/11/10, on e-bay, I found a 1971 Chevelle in Chino, California. I purchased it on the spot bringing it 3200 miles to Connecticut. It now has a walnut steering wheel and Cragar wheels with RWL tires. I am getting new paint, chrome bumpers and door handles put on it. Glad to have it home. It doesn’t seem like its been 40 years ago. Tender Years Have Come And Gone From 1971 to 2010. Owned by Jim Cole Waterbury, CT
