Description
The Oldsmobile 4-4-2 appeared for the 1964 model year as an optional performance package on the Cutlass and F-85 models. The 4-4-2 name referenced the 4-barrel carburetor, 4-speed manual gearbox, and dual (2) exhausts. This was at the very beginning of the muscle car era and the 4-4-2 was popular enough to become its own separate model in 1968. This new 442 model now had a three-speed manual as standard equipment, so the 442 now designated a 400ci V-8, 4-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust. The .....
GM A-body intermediates hit their peak in 1970, and the 442 received fresh styling and the 455CI V-8 was now standard equipment making 365 horsepower and an Earth shaking 500lb ft of torque. This monster big block was backed up by a standard Hurst HD 3-speed manual, optional 4-speed manual, or three speed automatic transmission. Out back was GMs corporate 12-bolt rear axle, necessary to handle all that tire shredding torque. The braking system was somewhat underwhelming when equipped with the standard 4-wheel unassisted drum brakes, but power front discs were optional. The suspension received front and rear sway bars, heavy duty springs, and gas shocks all around. This was truly a banker's hot rod, with style, comfort, and performance all in one beautiful package. The 1970 Oldsmobile 442 cataloged here for sale is a shining example of what made the 442s so popular in their day, and collectible now. Originally a Code 50 Bamboo gold car, this 442 has been refinished in stunning black with gold painted stripes making it a true head turner. The original build sheet shows that this 442 left the Linden, New Jersey assembly plant with C60 air conditioning, A01 tinted glass, A51 Stratobucket seats, D55 console, G90 performance 3.08 axle ratio, L31 455 4bbl. V8, M14 3-speed HD floor shift, N30 deluxe steering wheel, N47 variable ratio power steering, and U63 deluxe radio. From New Jersey the vehicle was shipped via rail by Anchor Motor Freight, Inc. to Jacksonville, FL where it was trucked to the original selling dealer in Daytona Beach, Florida. The included original 1970 Oldsmobile New Vehicle Warranty booklet shows that on February 17, 1970, a Mr. Gary Buck walked into Sunrise Oldsmobile Inc. on 340 N. Beach Street in Daytona and drove out in this very 70' 442. Where the story goes from there is lost to history, but being this was a Florida car from the get-go explains the pristine floor and trunk panels that appear to have never been repaired. This 442 now shows 99,999 miles on the odometer and with other insurance documentation appears to be correct and original mileage. Drive it a tenth of a mile further and you will have a new 442! Through the years this 442 has received a few upgrades from stock, with an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor, an Edelbrock aluminum intake, HEI distributor with blue wires, and a big aluminum radiator to keep it cool in the Florida heat. Keeping you cool in the Florida heat is the improved R134a air conditioning and with a modern AM/FM radio you can cruise in style and comfort with this 442.
