Description
Proof that new automotive design cues flow from the expensive to the common model range can be found on this 1951 Chrysler New Yorker. As new postwar designs emerged from the Big Three's studios, they replaced the older, two-box designs from before WWII.

This example underwent a comprehensive, frame-off restoration and is dressed in Juniper Green Metallic (code 21). The paint and trim are in overall excellent order with minor imperfections, as is beige power-folding softtop with glass .....
rear window. The engine bay is highly detailed and extremely tidy, as is the trunk with carpet and full-sized spare tire and wheel. The large, chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body. All bright work and chrome were done during restoration.

This big Chrysler rolls on Firestone Deluxe Champion wide whitewall tires, which are each mounted on 15-inch wire wheels with faux knock-off wheel covers. The tires and wheels are in overall very good condition.

Under the big hood is Chrysler's 331 CID FirePower Hemi V-8 engine. Nineteen fifty-one was the first model year for the highly efficient V-8 engine, which was rated for 20 horsepower more than Cadillac's same displacement V-8 of that period.

Chrysler introduced the 180 horsepower FirePower Hemi V-8 for 1951. FirePower Hemi-equipped cars could accelerate 0 to 60 mph in 10 seconds, faster than the Oldsmobile 88 Rocket engine of that time. The engine subsequently became a popular choice among hot rodders and racers. 1951 was the first year the famous Hemi was offered.

The original HEMI V-8 is paired with its optioned Fluid Torque Drive four-speed semi-automatic transmission.
Fluid Torque Drive, a true torque converter, replaced Fluid Drive. Cars with Fluid Torque Drive came only with Fluid Matic semi-automatic transmission and had a gear selector quadrant on the steering column. Hydraguide power steering, an industry first, appeared as an option on Chrysler cars with the Hemi engine. Other driver convenience features include power drum brakes and All-Weather Comfort System heater. An AM radio and clock complete the interior.

The beige leather interior, with cloth inserts (code 66) is beautiful. The front and rear bench seats are sumptuous. The beige carpet is plush and the inner door panels look fabulous. The two-tone metal dashboard is gorgeous and ivory, three-spoke steering wheel offers just enough contrast. The tonneau cover looks great, too.

The New Yorker was one of the longest-running nameplates in America, from 1940 to 1996 and in 1951 was the final model year for the long-wheelbase models.

Convertible competition to this New Yorker in 1951 included Buick's Series 50 Super, Cadillac's Series 62, Chrysler's own Imperial, Lincoln's Cosmopolitan, Mercury's Eight Convertible, Oldsmobile's 98 Deluxe Convertible and Packard's Convertible.

If big, postwar Chryslers are your thing, this New Yorker droptop deserves your scrutiny. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to check it out!
