A great experience at WV’s top car show
By Cassidy McCoy & Jessica Richards
The 2016 Charleston Rod Run and Doo Wop was the 11th annual event and West Virginia’s biggest car show. From Thursday, October 6 through Sunday October 9 the event was held along Kanawha Boulevard. The event saw more than 820 registered cars and participants from all over the mountain state and the East Coast with a few travelers coming from as far away as Florida, Indiana, Michigan, Canada and more!
In addition to the hundreds of car enthusiasts lined along the boulevard, thousands of spectators and attendants walked along the cruise-in style car show. The cars stretched a mile across Charleston’s downtown and parallel to the Ohio River. It provided participants with a unique view of the town and a fun all-around experience.
Wednesday, Oct. 5 the fun was kick started with a cruise to the Mardi Gras Casino & Resort. Hundreds of show cars packed the dog track’s parking lot for a night at one of Kanawha Valley’s biggest attractions. The 2016 Charleston Rod Run and Doo Wop began Thursday morning. Registration opened at 6 a.m. and most of the festivities ran from 10 a.m. to nightfall. Every morning the car crowd respectively saluted a flag during the National Anthem to start things off.
The live DJ from KAZ 68 FM was on hand daily with classic cruise-in hits. There was also 50/50 and silent auctions throughout the day.
Magic Island was packed with parts because of the swap meet and visitors could also try driving the Richard Petty racing simulator that was set up. Attendees also checked out pedal cars that were on display and vendors and concession stands that were open daily.
Fun Activities at the 2016 Charleston Rod Run and Doo Wop
In addition to the daily fun were special activities. Visitors could go on a scenic cruise and poker run or a poker walk through Charleston’s scenic downtown. Another thing was the Shops at the Doo Wop display with an array of primitives and shopping choices. There was a trolley ride that looped through some of Charleston’s most popular destinations and the Kid Zone that was filled with fun activities.
There was also a WV Drag Racers Hall of Fame Induction on Racer’s Row, a car crushing monster truck show from the XDP truck and nightly music at Haddad Riverfront Park from bands The Esquires, Johnnie Mikel, Dave & Whitney and The Street Players.
Saturday night at the 2016 Charleston Rod Run and Doo Wop featured quite possibly the coolest fireworks display I have ever seen by Zambelli International and the raffles were finally awarded. The raffles consisted of $500 Early Registration, the Pontiac Trans Am from Larry Dawson’s Auto Sales, the Xspec Power generator and pedal car. Finally, Sunday was a beautiful sunny day and more than 100 trophies awarded.
Most noteworthy of course was the selection of gorgeous cars. The show featured such a variety of vehicles. There was something beautiful, mean, powerful or antique do every spectator would be happy. The volunteers and staff create a memorable experience like none other. Registration is already open for the 12th annual Charleston Rod Run and Doo Wop October 4-8, 2017.
